  • Projection Mapping

This project was created for my Projection Mapping class, where we designed and animated visuals to be projected onto a building using BARCO projectors. The piece explored trompe l’oeil techniques to make the animations appear as if they were coming off the wall. The final event showcased our work on the Ringling College Academic Center, highlighting the projectors’ creative potential for design and animation.

After completing the projection, I repurposed the 3D scene into a lighting and look development study, experimenting with key lighting, rim accents, and color treatments to further elevate the visual mood.

BEHIND THE PROCESS

INITIAL IDEAS AND STORYBOARD IDEATION

At first, I explored two different concepts that varied in both style and story. Both ideas involved elements transforming to create the Motion Design logo, but I ultimately decided to change direction after realizing a classmate was developing something similar. I wanted my project to feel more personal and unique, reflecting my own interests, especially my love for sports.

CHOSEN CONCEPT DIRECTION

After several iterations, I developed a new concept centered around a sports locker. The original version featured an RCAD jersey, which I had planned to use for learning cloth simulation. However, given the tight schedule and evolving nature of the project, my creative director and I decided to focus on techniques I already knew.

DESIGNING FOR TROMPE L'OEIL

TROMPE L'OEIL

For this project, trompe l'oeil was the key focus. The goal was to create an illusion of depth, making the visuals appear as if they were coming off the wall. The purpose of the piece was to demonstrate the full potential of BARCO’s projectors when used by a motion designer.

Working in 3D space with Cinema 4D, camera placement was crucial to maintaining the illusion. I positioned the camera from the same viewpoint as the audience at the event, matching the exact perspective of the building to create a convincing sense of realism.
